WHAT IS A PERIOD?

Have you ever questioned or had an inquisitiveness on what a period is?
Why do we get it? As a fille, when I questioned Amma about what is a period she told me that women bleed every month at a certain date for 5 days in line and it stops and it repeats again. She said the date may change every month. Little did know about the W’s of the period- what, why, when.
The inquisitiveness stirred me to learn about the period, sexual and reproductive health and today I stand incepting an exclusive page writing on the same to all my fellow humans to help them learn what it is.
There are many stories that I have learnt in discourses. one such story is the story shared by my student which was not less surprising for me. Well, I/we live in India, stories here don’t surprise me/us because I/we have heard and fantasized about flying chariots and magical deer at a very young age.
Here goes one of the mythical stories on why do we get a period?
Once Lord Shiva’s underarm started bleeding, Goddess Parvathi, wife of Shiva, felt sad and worried to see him like that. After pondering, Parvathi asked Shiva to give her a Vara(boon); her nerige (pallu) of saree to act as blood absorbent. While Shiva has always been a generous god in giving boons and worrying for it later, he blessed Parvathi with a boon and Parvathi started to bleed every month thereafter.
Okay! I hope the story was interesting but the science of why and what is a period is even more interesting so keep an eye on the next post to know why do we get a period
